Tacoma Contamination
A visual contrast of arsenic and lead contamination in the city of Tacoma, WA.

Smelter contamination data is analyzed against 2010 Pierce County census block demographic data to determine contamination rates in areas containing at-risk youth. All data was restricted to Pierce County’s routine base map and the dissolved municipalities.

Two smelter databases are appended to form a uniform layer of measurements. By exporting arsenic and lead (merged) data, samples that varied by depths (upper and lower fields of activity) were dissolved by location to concentrate the recorded listings of contamination across Tacoma and the surrounding area. Mean measurements for the concentration of arsenic and lead are taken to display points. Because points don’t display areas, the sample sites were interpolated through kriging to predict the pollutant concentration between each sample site. This allows us to observe areas of the highest concentrations of lead and arsenic
